Our Story
The Wooden Spoon Family
The Wooden Spoon is a family-owned breakfast and lunch café inspired by generations of home cooks. Our mission is to serve fresh, delicious food in a warm, welcoming environment.
From our signature breads to our hearty breakfasts and lunches, every dish is made with love and care. We believe in supporting our local community and treating every guest like family.
A home cook for over 20 years, Tina Yake has been inspired by two generations of home cooks from her grandmother and her mother. Her family has been in the food industry since 1983 and has been very active with the family's business in the baking industry until 1999 when she started her own family.
Wayne, her husband, and their children have been her biggest fans until her co-workers talked her into cooking for them on a regular basis. Since The Wooden Spoon's inception, Tina and Wayne have been catering to businesses in the area for their breakfast and lunch needs. While their specialty is American cuisine, their shop features high grade, deli meats. Taking that one step further, Wayne and Tina are determined to put a twist on family favorites such as their philly cheesesteaks, panwiches, and homemade corned beef hash.
Our Journey
The Beginning
The Wooden Spoon was founded as a corporate catering company with a simple dream: to bring homemade comfort food to local businesses. Starting from a family kitchen, Tina and Wayne began serving their signature dishes to co-workers and neighbors.
From Catering to Café
As Tina and Wayne's kids grew up, The Wooden Spoon evolved from corporate catering into a breakfast and lunch café. The community embraced us with open arms, and our menu quickly became a local favorite.
Robert Joins & Local Partnerships
Robert joined the team as our General Manager. That same year, we began partnering with local farmers and suppliers to source the freshest ingredients for our kitchen.
Second Location
We opened our second location to serve more of our growing community. This expansion allowed us to reach new neighborhoods while maintaining the same family atmosphere and quality.
Adapting to Change
During challenging times, we adapted our business model to continue serving our community safely. We introduced online ordering, delivery services, and enhanced our carryout options.
New Partnership
Robert bought into the business and became a partner. He overhauled the menu and brought new ideas, slowly incorporating new systems and processes.
Catering Services Launch
We re-launched our catering services, bringing The Wooden Spoon experience to events, celebrations, and corporate functions.
Lenexa Farmers Market
We joined the Lenexa Farmers Market, bringing our fresh-baked breads and from-scratch goods directly to the community every week.
The Perfect Crumb Bakery
We added The Perfect Crumb Bakery, a dedicated artisan bread counter expanding our bakery offerings and bringing our from-scratch breads to even more of the community.

★★★★★"This is my favorite breakfast place! The food is fantastic. The staff is fantastic! It's hard to choose between the blueberry pancakes & the creme brunette French toast! Everything is fresh & delicious. You can also get different breads & cinnamon rolls to go. They have indoor & outdoor seating too. I love this place so much!"
★★★★★"This place is great! It’s quaint in a very good way. Kind of like an old school diner. The food is creative and yummy and they have GLUTEN FREE PANCAKES! And not just one type of gluten free pancake - they have a fun variety and they are goooood! Have you ever had a gluten free pancake with crispy crunchy edges? I never didn’t until today. The food is great. The service is fast and superb. Prices are reasonable. The staff are so very friendly to EVERY customer no matter who you are. Please give this place a try if you haven’t already! Special thanks to our server, Casey who made us feel right at home. She knows how to make sure you have everything you need and want without being at all overbearing. That’s an art and it’s much appreciated."
★★★★★"Incredible homemade food. Great coffee. I tried the lemon ricotta pancake with raspberry drizzle and homemade whip cream (just one to taste) and it was one of the best pancakes I’ve ever had! The vegetarian eggs Benedict and hash browns were great also. My husband had a burger and tator tots. Everything was cooked perfectly. The wait staff was attentive. Coffee was wonderful. This is going to be a repeat when visiting for sure. Breakfast and lunch all day. 🩷"
